The way Hawke says this is also important, because despite someone just entering her home unannounced and out of blue, she simply smiles back at Merrill and even laughs a little. Hawke responds back with her usual witty remark, stating that she likes it when Merrill is flustered. (I’m going to use mostly sarcastic Hawke here for responses) This scene hasn’t even lasted for more than few seconds at this point, but it’s very clear that Merrill is extremely nervous here. Merrill walks circles restlessly as she explains that she has been looking for Hawke all over Hightown, rambling so much that she even realizes it herself and stops. What follows seems to pay homage to how Merrill was first introduced, although taking it a bit further than that. It’s pretty clear that she has been searching for her for a while and she’s stressed/nervous about something. The way she says “Oh, thank goodness you’re here!” tells that much, because she sounds very relieved. So everything starts off with Merrill entering Hawke’s mansion. So without a further ado, let’s get started: I’ve been meaning to make an analysis of this scene for quite a while, because I think that there are a lot of layers here that some people might have missed on their playthrough or otherwise.
